It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Barbara Knobel Verboomen who passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 87 at the Suroît Regional Hospital in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC.  

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Georges J Verboomen, her son Louis, her parents Godfrey and Cornelia (nee Hendrickx), her sister Cora and her brothers Kees, Peter (Dolly), and John (Kay). She leaves in mourning her children Georges R, Mary Ann (Sam), Chris (Kathleen) and Jean-Louis (Tracey), her grandchildren Valerie (Paul), Jason (Shannon), Kyle (Emilia), Aaron (Natasha), Julian (Tamara) and Nolan, her great grandchildren Phynnleigh, Xavier, Jakob, Aiden, Noah, Emma, Atticus, Chelsea, Tilly and Aubrie, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends near and far.  

Barbara loved to sew, knit, and quilt; fabricating lovely patchwork quilts, and knitting clothing for either family, friends, or to help raise funds for various charitable organizations. Barbara was a woman of faith and had been a member of the Women’s Auxiliary at Saint-Thomas Aquinas Church in Hudson Qc. She also had a “green thumb”, as she loved gardening and tending to beautiful flower beds at the family home in Saint-Lazare. She was quite the baker, and we will miss her legendary apple pies, lemon meringue pies and Christmas treats. She loved going on fishing trips with her husband and was quite the angler. 

She was a country girl from the small town of Etten-Leur in the Dutch province of North Brabant. She endured the war in her childhood years which must have shaped her strong and resilient character. In 1952, at the age of 17, Barbara immigrated to Canada with her family and settled in the Ottawa area. She married soon after and helped raise her family with all the love she could afford. She will be dearly missed by us all.

A religious service will be held on August 26th at 2:00 pm at the Saint-Lazare Church located at 1980 Chemin Ste. Angélique, Saint-Lazare, QC J7T 2Y7. Condolences can be given prior to the service starting at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fondation de l’hôpital du Suroît.
