Una Lenora Haynes

1913 - 2023

At Westmount, Quebec on Sept. 2, 2023, Una passed away six weeks before her 110th birthday.

She was unfailingly generous, deeply, quietly devout in her Christian faith, a friend, mentor and “second mom” to many.

Having trained as a seamstress in her native Barbados, Una followed her husband Fred Adams to Montreal in 1949, where she worked in the garment industry, and later, as a nursing assistant. Theirs was a household full of love of community, overflowing with extended family, foster children and, invariably, several newcomers from the Caribbean, whom they lodged and helped find employment. Along the way, she taught piano, raised prize African violets, volunteered at her church, crocheted and sewed.

Una outlived all of her contemporaries, but made new friends wherever she went. Until the last few weeks of her life, she was chatting on the phone, following the news, puzzling, using her iPad, and always, always reading her bible.

Predeceased by her husband Fred, and her sister Leotta Corbin, she is survived by her sons, Dr. Robert Adams (Deborah) and Neil Adams (Carlene), grandsons Daniel, Jonathan and Aaron, and great-grandson Theo. She will be missed by the extended Adams, Knight, Lynch and Payne families, as well as many other dear friends and relatives in Canada, the United States and Barbados.

Many thanks to Drs. Iny and Borten, and the nurses, PABs and staff at Place Kensington and Vista who cared so lovingly for her in her last years.
