Beverly Chandler

1946 - 2023

Beverly Chandler died Sunday, September 10, 2023 under the wonderful care of the staff at the Balfour Mount Palliative Care Unit, McGill University Health Centre. She was 77.

Bev learned she had advanced ovarian cancer in May 2022. From that moment until her death she confronted the various indignities of treatment and the disease with grace and resolve. In that effort she was supported by her immediate and extended family and friends.

Beverly leaves her husband Tor Haines, her daughter, Margaret Valary Chandler-Haines, her son, Cameron Chandler-Haines and her children by marriage, Heidi Haines, Victor Haines and Martin Haines. Her many step grandchildren benefited from Bev’s kindness and generosity over the years. Beverly also leaves her brother, Harry Chandler, his wife, Deborah Halvorsen and their children, Harry Chandler and Rebecca Chandler, who also benefited from Bev’s enthusiasm and active engagement throughout their lives.

Beverly was born March 7, 1946 in Shawinigan Falls, QC. She grew up in St. Lambert, QC and graduated from McGill University and the University of Toronto. Her field was information management. She assumed positions of increasing responsibility at the University of Alberta, Redpath Library of McGill University, and finally Vanier College—where she retired only ten years ago.

Beverly was an active learner all her life with a wide range of interests. Even near her end, she was writing about early twentieth-century social work in Montreal. During her last summer, she and a friend convinced the City of Westmount to launch a program of gentle exercise for older adults.

Bev will be sorely missed by her family and circle of friends each of whom will catch themselves wanting to tell her something or ask her advice when it is no longer possible. And more’s the sorrow.
