Today, I lay my dear mother to rest.
A woman who was polite, reliable and strong - qualities that are ingrained in me.
Her no-nonsense approach to anything came from her disciplined character. You
knew when she was angry but she had a wonderful laugh and loved to entertain
family and friends. She always knew what to do, how to get anywhere and supported
anyone who needed her help.
My mother came from a hard working and respectable family in FairView, Christ Church
in Barbados. Through a Domestic Placement program, she and 9 other women landed
at Dorval Airport on August 4th 1956. She made her clothes and mine, worked full time,
cooked, cleaned, went through good and bad times - always with faith and dignity.
It was with that same dignity that I got to care for her in later years.
She's at rest and in our hearts - now and always.
