Obituary
Neil Tynan
1954 - 2024
The family of Neil Tynan is deeply saddened to announce his sudden and unexpected death. He died at home of natural causes on Jan. 22, 2024.
Son of the late Adele and Gerry Tynan, and the family’s youngest, he was predeceased by his sister Sheila in 2015. He is survived by his brother Len (Carol) of Montreal, and sister Janice Kennedy (Dan) of Ottawa, as well as by niece Kelly Tynan of Moncton and nieces and nephew Sarah, Jessica and Alex Kennedy of Ottawa.
Neil was a character. A lifelong lover of words in a family that loved words, he hammered out gripping adventure tales on an old Underwood in his youth, and routinely peppered his adult conversation with puns and wordplay.
But the passion of his life was rock music (with threads of folk, jazz and country), from the 1960s to the present. His knowledge and appreciation of music was vast and encyclopedic, seeded with esoteric details about famous artists — and esoteric details about artists hardly anybody knew. Chatting with Neil was never dull, never predictable.
His life was difficult, and he lived with many challenges. But he smiled often, told good jokes and loved conversing about some new film, some old song, some political outrage. He was smart, he was funny, he knew things and he cared. We’re going to miss him.
Rest easy, little brother.
An informal celebration of Neil’s life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Kane Fetterly funeral home, 5301 Decarie Blvd., Montreal.
