Obituary
Malcolm Spicer
1931 - 2024
Malcolm Spicer, 92, passed away peacefully at the Montreal General Hospital on March 5th, 2024. Malcolm was born on March 30th, 1931 in Montreal to Chester and Margaret Spicer where he grew up with his two older brothers Jim and Marvin, his twin sister Margaret and younger sisters Mary, and identical twins Elizabeth and Rebecca.
Malcolm loved to travel. He went to New York City as a teenager to visit family and drove to Mexico City while in university. In 1964, when he met his wife Huguette Spicer (née Gagné) they drove to California on what would be the first of many road trips together. Their love of travel continued with numerous trips to Europe and the rest of the world.
Malcolm was an authentic family man who was deeply loved by his wife Huguette who will always cherish their shared enjoyment of la belle vie. He will be remembered by his children Sebastien (Nancy), Valerie (Kt), and Jonathan (Meg) and his grandchildren Alexandra, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and William. Malcolm was an incredibly kind husband and supportive father who encouraged his children to follow their bliss.
Malcolm loved being in nature and spent many years with his family in the Laurentians or exploring new places on camping trips. Malcolm was an avid artist and supported himself through university by sign-painting trucks and murals.
Malcolm was a professor of Theology at Concordia University for 30+ years where he lectured on belief and being. Malcolm’s classrooms were always full. His joy for teaching and learning from his students was palpable. His lectures were an eclectic alchemy of religion, art, and science.
Malcolm’s innovative guest speaker series at the university brought luminaries such as Joseph Campbell and Marie Louise von Franz, which contributed to the founding of the Montreal C.G. Jung Society. His guests would often stay with the Spicer family, sharing a good meal with Huguette and the children.
Upon retirement, Malcolm enjoyed painting and reading on world history, astrophysics, and the origins of the universe. Malcolm will be missed by his family and friends for his sense of humour and his ability to always see the good in everything and everyone.
A reception for family and friends will be held on June 22nd, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Kane & Fetterly, 5301 Decarie Avenue in Montreal.
In memory of Malcolm, donations can be made to the David Suzuki Foundation One Nature. David Suzuki was one of Malcom’s earliest guest speakers and represents Huguette’s passion for the environment.
