Godefroy-M. Cardinal

1936 - 2022

Lise Bissonnette is deeply saddened to inform you of the death of Godefroy-Maurice Cardinal, her companion and the love of her life. It was on December 16 at 12:30 p.m., at the Sacré-Coeur hospital in Montreal, an exemplary establishment among all.

His intensity of being will persist with his children, his pride: Stéphane, Godefroy Alain (Claire Maisonneuve), Laurence, Julie. It will be the same for their mother, Réjane Dalpé. His memory will speak to his grandchildren: Élizabeth, Étienne, Jean-Christophe, Félix-Antoine, Chloé, as well as to his brand new great-granddaughters, Évelyne and Juliette.

He was the eldest of the eight children of Raoul-Maurice Cardinal (1908-1981) and Yvette Dion (1916-2005). He was followed by Madeleine (deceased), Jeannine, Lise, Pierre, Lucie, André (deceased), Marie-Josée. Their spouses and children could also count on his affection.

Godefroy uncompromisingly upheld two convictions: education and art. A born teacher, he began a life as a teacher in the former Normal Schools before being put in charge, at the very beginning of his thirties, of the coordination of the committee to which the State of Quebec had entrusted the creation and implementation of the University of Quebec in Montreal. He will subsequently be its first executive vice-rector, in the midst of an irreverent effervescence that he liked. When things calm down, he will return to teaching in the Sciences of Education, on the themes of the links between education and society.
At all times he will have above all lived in symbiosis with art and artists, a commitment rather than a simple passion. Those who knew him know that. His loyalty to them was personal but was also manifested by his Galerie du 22 mars (1984-1986) and the mandates he assumed, on temporary withdrawal from UQAM, as interim director of the Musée des beaux-arts. arts de Montréal (1976-1978), and as general manager of the Musée du Québec (now Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec) from 1986 to 1988.
He hated traveling, determined to wander only among books , the works and objects of art, from the oldest to the newest, that he will have collected constantly and until the end, ignoring the rational rules of collecting. His perseverance in this regard was inexhaustible.
He was Companion of the Order of Arts and Letters of Quebec.
His requirement was his character and his unconditional way of loving us.

A meeting in his memory will take place a little later in 2023.
In his memory, a donation could be offered to the Fondation de l'Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, or to the Fondation de l'UQAM.
