Maria Bandrauk (née Ignatow)

1944 - 2024

Longtime parishioner and choir member of the St. Nicholas Cathedral, Maria Ignatow-Bandrauk reposed in the Lord on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Maria, or Manya as she was affectionately known, was born in Germany, on February 1, 1944. This was at the height of the bombing during the war and the family lived day to day just trying to survive. Her father, Anatoli had brought the whole family from Belarus: babushka Natalia, his wife Zinaida, his brother Georgiy and sister Lydia (Gurkow). Manya’s brother Aleksander, was born in 1947.

Anatoli came to Canada in 1949 followed by the rest of the family in 1950. All of the family became lifelong members of Saint Nicholas Cathedral from the early days when the cathedral was still on Rachel Street in Montreal. The Ignatow family was dedicated to the church and the church was central to family life.

Manya was an extremely talented individual. Academically, she was always at the top of her class and music was one of her great inspirations. She completed seven years of classical conservatory training in piano and many will remember how she enjoyed sitting at the keyboard, effortlessly playing and encouraging all to sing along. Music, church music in particular, was central to the Ignatow family. Zinaida, an accomplished soprano, who sang in the church choir for some 50 years, Lydia a wonderfully clear and delicate alto, Aleksander, a powerful bass-baritone, and Manya, who could sing all the parts would complete the Ignatow Choir. Most family get together's ended with a round of singing from the Ignatow choir.

Manya was a very strongly motivated and dedicated person who brought these talents to help the church throughout the years. She was always one of the key organizers of any initiative and would always find a way to make things work. She joined the dance/orchestra group “Gousli” late in the 1950s, becoming a principal dancer and singer. To collect money for the cathedral that had moved to DeMontigny, she started a Christmas carol choir singing ”kolyadky’ at the parishioners’ homes with her father driving the singers. Significant amounts of money were collected. While Manya was a mezzo-soprano, she sang in the cathedral choir. Prazdniki like Pascha were most important, and she reveled in learning new pieces under our great Director, Georgi M. Sayig.

She married André Bandrauk at the cathedral in 1966. They had two children: Mark (Christine), and Natalie (Roger), and have three grandchildren - Thomas, Benjamin and Alexander. The family travelled internationally, and eventually settled in Sherbrooke, Quebec, where André became a world class professor of theoretical chemistry at the University of Sherbrooke. Manya, always needing to be busy, decided to take on the directorship of continuing education at Bishops University in Lennoxville, and ran the program for several years until her retirement.

Though she lived in the Sherbrooke area, some two hours away from Montreal, she still was a regular parish and choir member. When the cathedral burned down in 1988, Manya devoted all of her resources to help St Nicholas Cathedral recover from the tragedy. While singing in the Montreal Symphony’s Concert choir, she convinced the director and choir to learn and perform Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil. A benefit concert was held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Montreal. This inspired and led to a number of annual concerts by Saint Nicholas' choir at the St. Viateur Catholic church on Laurier Avenue.

In the early 2000s, she founded a choir from the Sherbrooke area to sing Russian Orthodox liturgical music and Slavic folk music. The name of the choir was “Slava.” Following the Lac Megantic rail disaster, she embarked on a series of concerts throughout Quebec with Slava to raise funds to help those who had suffered from the event. Manya's determination and talents shone through each of these concert efforts. She was the impresario, advertising and marketing specialist, choir Director and financial Director.

In her later years, before she became ill, she continued to focus on the cathedral to make sure that the repertoire for the great church feasts was celebratory. All in all, Manya’s life was devoted to exposing the beauty and spirituality of Russian orthodoxy and Russian culture in general, to all - those within the faith and culture as well as those outside. We have all benefitted from her love and care for us and the church. Let us now remember her and pray for her soul as she passes into the next life.

Memory Eternal to the newly reposed servant of God Maria !

A panihida service will take place on  Wednesday evening at 06:00pm at the cathedral.
The funeral ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 29, from 11:00am to 12:00pm followed by a private burial ceremony for family members at Mount Royal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family.
