Leonardo Aquilino

1946 - 2024

Leonardo Aquilino passed away peacefully at his residence on August 30, surrounded by loved ones.  Len was born in Orsara di Puglia, Italy in 1946.  With dogged determination, he carved out his own path in life by setting out to Canada in 1968.  Newly arrived, he embarked in education at the University of Toronto, where he undertook a B.A. (74), B.Ed (75) & M.A. French (79), having had no prior French language training,  and graduated magna cum laude.

After graduating, he began a teaching career in Northern Ontario, where he also met his partner of over 45 years, Emma Zambusi.  Eventually, they settled in Pickering, Ontario and went on to have three children of whom he was immensely proud: Michael (Mireille), Lisa (Patrick), and Mark.  He will be missed by his four grandchildren, who always brought a smile to his face: Gabriella, Emily, Matteo, and Sophie.

Len will be remembered for his love of friends, food, and family.  He held a special place in his heart for all of his lifelong friends from the Italian community, and often recounted stories of their kindness, support and friendship during his struggles as a newly immigrated citizen.  Sharing a meal with them, growing food to feed his family, and teaching all of the above on how to perfect an Italian recipe, were of utmost importance to him.  He also took great pride in sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of history with all of those who would listen.

Len is survived by his devoted siblings: Giuliana (Rocco), Bruno (Rita), and Marilena (late Nunzio), very special extended family members, as well as many nieces and nephews.  Despite distance and time, they all remained close to his heart.

Per Leonardo’s wishes, there will be no formal service.  A private gathering with family will be held at a later date, to commemorate his life.
