Phulmatie Betty Mangal

February 27, 1945 - May 4, 2025

Phulmatie Mangal, fondly known as Betty, passed away peacefully on May 4th, 2025, at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, at the age of 80. Daughter of the late Rajpatie Mangal and Mangal Deosarran, Betty was predeceased by her sister Sirmatie (Gladys) Mangal, who passed away days before her, on April 25th, 2025.

She is lovingly remembered by her sister Lilmatie (Sugarbet) Sookdeo from Guyana and her brother Ivan Mangal in the USA; brother-in-law Jaikissoon Sookdeo from Guyana and sister-in-law Doreen Mangal in the USA; nieces and nephews Monica Sookdeo, Marilyn Bharosi, Valentine Sookdeo, Indira Bharosi, Joseph Sookdeo, Mala Mangal, Neela Mangal, Shareena Mangal, and Devanand Mangal; grandchildren Jerome, Randy, Thessa, Lisa, Rachael, Anasha, Shazim, Nadia, Rozetta, and Devin; and her great-grandchildren Emily, Ethan, Elle, Madison, and Estephan.

Betty moved to Canada as a young woman and settled in Montreal, finding her second family in the home of Sheldon and Karen Abramovitch, where she raised Scott, Jamie, and Randy as if they were  her own children, along with their loving Yorkshire Terrier, Champie. Betty was loved and equally cherished by the extended Abramovitch family, especially Bill and Sunny Abramovitch.

As her children grew up, Betty became a mother-in-law to Jeff Fixman, Talia Liberman, and Natasha Albilia, and a grandmother to Matthew, JJ, Sean, Emily, Isabelle, Sydney, Sasha, and Adam, who affectionately called her Boo.

Betty was a giving and beautiful soul whose infectious smile will be remembered by the many lives she touched. While small in stature and often quiet, Betty’s presence was enormous and her words were wise. Even though her body was constantly giving her pain and challenges, Betty never complained and battled like a warrior all the way to her final days.

Betty was the glue within her family, her generosity was endless and extended beyond her family to her friends, neighbourhood and community . So many people will feel a void without her frequent phone calls and guidance that brought blessings and joy, keeping everyone in her special circle united.

Thank you to all of the doctors and compassionate staff of the 6th floor and Intensive Care Unit of the Jewish General Hospital, and to Marivic, Grace, Beryl, Lynne, Madeline and Malek who teamed up with Karen, Scott, Jamie, and Randy to help take such good care of Betty as she fought and defied the odds in the last few months of her life.

May God bless and accept her soul and may she find eternal peace
