Obituary
Raouf Greiche
1941 - 2025
Raouf Greiche (b. Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt September 22, 1941 – d. April 29, 2025 Mount-Royal, Quebec, Canada) was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather but above all, a family man with an enormous heart. His family, from children to distant cousins, was always his greatest priority. Raouf was very proud of his heritage. After immigrating to Canada from Egypt in 1967, he soon became a pillar of the Lebanese community in Montreal. Through his successful optometry business ‘Greiche & Scaff’ (founded with his cousin and dear friend, Nagib Scaff, in 1976), he extended employment and opportunity to countless Lebanese and Egyptian peers. He was a major contributor to Cathedrale Saint-Saveur in Montreal as well as the Cedar’s Cancer Foundation, helping to organize yearly golf tournaments to raise money for cancer research.
Through ‘Greiche & Scaff’, Raouf and Nagib fundamentally altered the optometry business in Canada. They took the optometrist doctor’s office out of the shadows, and brilliantly combined it with a chic retail storefront. With Nagib, they expanded their business to 60 stores throughout Quebec, winning many awards in the process, and also gave generously to the Universite de Montreal Ecole d’Optometrie, including the creation of an optometry lab and were recognized by the school as an official ‘batisseur’ during the university’s centenary celebrations.
As a man, Raouf never compromised quality. He always sought and found his way to the best things in life. His love of gastronomy took him and his wife, and often with his family proudly in tow, around the world—from quaint sea-side eateries to fine dining at five star tables. Raouf always styled himself in bold, avant-garde fashion, from Moschino to Versace, while remaining classy and supremely elegant. He was a handsome man, whose love of art brought him and his wife, Sarah McCutcheon together. They built a collection in concert and donated generously to museums. His sense of well-being was informed by his dedication to fitness, his passion for social gathering and his gravitation towards laughter. Through bridge-playing nights with friends (he was a certified Life-Master), his and Sarah’s legendary Valentine’s Day parties, and dinner out on the town, people were magically drawn to Raouf by his gentle heart, kind smile and undeniable charisma.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah, his children Leila, Georges, and Emlyn (his grandchildren Audrey, Victoria, William), his sister Rose Ghattas, his loving friend Dr. Reda Farag and many others close to him who loved him so much.
Thank you Cristie, Joana, Bathsheba, Palm, Dax, Ryan, Rose, Joey, Ann and Jie for all your loving care.
