Obituary
Elie Pouliot
1932 - 2023
Brother Élie Pouliot, of the Christian Brothers community, died at the Résidence De La Salle, Laval, on September 8, 2023, at the age of 90 years and 8 months. Son of Émilien Pouliot and Edmée Doray, he was born in Beauharnois on December 11, 1932.
Brother Élie made his first commitment to the Brothers at the age of 18, in 1950, and spent four years studying in Laval-des-Rapides, then in Rome (Italy) and Hérouxville (France) to prepare for his African mission; these years enabled him to develop a solid general culture and learn as much as possible about his future country of commitment, Cameroon; he arrived in Ngaoundéré at the age of 22 in 1954. He subsequently worked as a teacher and principal (often both at the same time) in various Brothers' schools in Yaoundé, Douala, Diang and Bafang. After a few years' study at the Université de Montréal, where he obtained a degree in physics, he returned to Cameroon and taught at the prestigious Collège Vogt, Yaoundé, before becoming its principal while continuing to teach science. In 1985, 30 years after his arrival in Cameroon, he was appointed Visitor (Provincial Superior) of the Douala district, a position he held for 6 years. He returned permanently to Montreal in 2000, after some 46 years of commitment to education in Cameroon.
In addition to his religious family, he is survived by his sister-in-law Céline Hébert (the late Jean Pouliot), as well as nieces and nephews: Lucie, Lise, Maurice, Martin, Sylvain, Madeleine, Philippe, Guy and Robert. He also leaves many friends in Quebec and Cameroon.
Funeral service on Thursday, September 21 at 11 a.m. at Résidence De La Salle, 300 chemin du Bord de l'Eau, Laval.
Reception at Salle Toussaint-Dufresne from 9 a.m., where the body will lie in state. Interment of ashes will follow at Notre-Dame des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal.
