John Joseph Griffin

February 16, 1931 - October 10, 2024

John Joseph Griffin passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, on October 10 2024. Loving and devoted husband of Ann Louise Griffin (née Martin). Cherished father of John (Melissa), Michael (Laurie), Teresa (Vic), Virginia (Fred), Joseph (Gabriella), Robert (Debra), Patricia (Sean), David (Linda). He was predeceased by his son Richard (Gloria), whom he now joins. Loving son of Albert and Laura Griffin. Caring brother to Joan (Tony), Harry (Claire), Fr. Richard Griffin, Peter (Joan), Philip (Margaret), and Paul (Cathy).

John was born on February 16, 1931 in N.D.G. John and his wife Ann met as young children in school and maintained a devoted and loving friendship through 68 years of marriage. Their nuptials took place in 1956 at The Ascension of Our Lord Church in Westmount. Together they raised nine children. John had a career at Bell Canada, retiring after 45 years. An avid athlete and top-rate competitor in handball. John was a staple at the N.D.G. YMCA for more than 50 years, where he developed many friendships in the weightroom and on the tennis and racquetball courts.

With open arms John and Ann welcomed their ever growing family to the cottage at Lake MacDonald, where celebrations of birthdays and many more joyous family get-togethers took place. A boxer in his youth, he remained a lifelong lover of the sport. John could regularly be found at home watching the fights, cigar in hand, family at his side, grandchildren at his feet.

Remembered affectionately as “J.J.” by his fifty-one grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren, John was above all a family man. He was a devoted husband to Ann, an exemplar of virtue for his six sons and three daughters. Through his union with Ann he was blessed with a family too large to mention by name here. In life, however, he dedicated the quiet attention needed for each individual to form an impactful bond. Always a true gentleman, John’s faith, strength, loyalty and compassion continue to represent an ideal for us all.

Visitation will be held on Monday October 21, 2pm-5pm and 7pm-9pm at Kane & Fetterly Funeral Home (5031 Decarie Blvd, Montreal). A funeral will be held Tuesday October 22, 11am at Ascension of Our Lord Church (375 Kitchener Ave., corner Clarke and Sherbrooke, Westmount
